Cloudflare has added new capabilities to its zero trust platform Cloudflare One to help organizations securely adopt, build, and deploy generative AI applications.

According to Cloudflare, employees are using AI for numerous tasks, from writing code to generating marketing copy to summarizing confidential documents. Unfortunately, generative AI interactions can involve sending company data to these AI applications, and companies don’t tend to have visibility into the specifics of these interactions.

“This quiet, unmanaged usage is “Shadow AI,” and it represents a new, high-stakes security blind spot. To combat this, we need a new approach—one that provides visibility into this new class of applications and gives security teams the control they need, without impeding the innovation that makes these tools so valuable,” Cloudflare wrote in a blog post.

Its new Shadow AI Report provides visibility and analytics of AI activity in general purpose models like ChatGPT, code-generation assistants like GitHub Copilot, and other specialized tools for areas like marketing, data analysis, or content creation.

Once shadow AI use is uncovered, customers can use Cloudflare Gateway to enforce AI policies. They can fully block specific AI applications, limit the types of data uploaded to them, and complete reviews of AI tools to ensure they meet security standards.

AI Prompt Protection also allows a way for security teams to identify potentially risky AI interactions and flag them, rather than blocking usage outright. When an employee attempts to use sensitive data in their prompt, they can automatically receive a warning, or be blocked from sending the prompt.

And finally, the Zero Trust MCP Server Control brings all MCP tool calls into a single dashboard where security teams can set user-level policies at the gateway and individual MCP server levels.

“The world’s most innovative companies want to pull the AI lever to move, build and scale fast, without sacrificing security,” said Matthew Prince, CEO and co-founder of Cloudflare. “We are in a unique position to help power that innovation–and help bring AI to all businesses safely.”
