Sysdig has announced that it has donated its recently created open source cloud analysis project Stratoshark to the Wireshark Foundation.
Stratoshark is an evolution of the Wireshark project, an open source network analysis tool, and Falco, a cloud-native threat detection tool—both created at Sysdig.
“At Sysdig, we fundamentally believe that security should be a collaborative, transparent effort for defenders – not an asymmetrical battle,” said Loris Degioanni, founder and CTO of Sysdig, and one of the creators of Wireshark and Stratoshark. “That belief was the foundation for Wireshark and Falco, and it’s the guiding principle that led us to create Stratoshark. By donating Stratoshark to the Wireshark Foundation, we’re ensuring that the community can continue to innovate, refine, and strengthen security together.”
The Wireshark Foundation was established in 2023 to be a home for Wireshark and related projects and provide a framework for their long-term stewardship, sustainability, and education.
By joining the foundation, Stratoshark will receive stronger governance and get access to a greater network of contributors who can work on the project.
“I’ve seen the power of open source security and community-driven development firsthand, especially when backed by organizations committed to building in the open,” said Uli Heilmeier, cybersecurity architect at Krones, core developer of Stratoshark, and contributor to Falco. “Stratoshark’s donation to the Wireshark Foundation means that it can continue to evolve under the same transparent, collaborative model that has made Wireshark a generational powerhouse.”
